Dada dropped again

The Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy was announced today and there was no place for former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. Player performances at the Irani Trophy is to be be considered for the selection of  Team India which will play Australia later this year. Ganguly was dropped where as the other members of the ‘Fab 4’, Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman made the cut.

The selectors have committed crude injustice against the veteran southpaw, who is regarded as the finest left hander India has ever produced. Just because Ganguly couldn’t perform well in the Sri Lanka series does not make him eligible to be dropped. For that matter none of the Indian batsmen did well in Sri Lanka except for a few. In fact, Tendulkar averaged lower than Ganguly. Dada was also one of last season’s best batsmen making more than a thousand runs in the process. If he can be dropped, why are players like Sachin and Dravid still in the team?

The selectors are definitely playing unnecessary politics here. Even the last time Ganguly was left out, others players who had also been under performing were retained. Yuvraj Singh has also been not included, but that is understandable. But the Punjab batsmen had been going through the worst patch of his career. He has also been struggling with his knee injury keeping him slightly immobile.

The Irani Trophy would have been a great opportunity for Ganguly to try to regain his lost form. But with him being excluded, chances of playing the Aussies are dim. It was the same Sourav Ganguly who had lead India to a historic series win against the ‘arrogant’ Aussies seven years back.
