GPRS rates of 1 paise/kb; call rates of 1 paise/second – Just some of the cool features India’s latest mobile operator Tata Docomo is bringing. The GSM service is a joint venture between India’s very own Tata Tele Services and Japan’s predominant network NTT Docomo. Tata’s CDMA service Indicom hasn’t been all that good, but the attractive tariffs enough should be able to woo people to the new service. Considering number portability is just around the corner, prices shoud be dropping even more as the operators would be ready to do anything to prevent customers from jumping ship.

At the moment I’m using Vodafone. The service is pretty decent and most of my friends are using it too. But the feature that I’ve been attracted to the most has obviously been its super-good Internet services. 10 p/10 kb at zero rental is music to the ears of any net-savvy person. It has hepled me to keep in touch with Facebook and Twitter. But now that Docomo has gone one step further in charging users  for every 1 kb rather than 10 kb,  it will only make net on the go even more cheaper. Btw Airtel’s internet sucks simply because it has no zero rental GPRS plans. I don’t really talk on the phone but that may just change with Docomo’s 1 sec pulse. But even this may change with Docomo’s arrival. This is even better than the 10 paise per call offers on Vodafone and other networks. On the flipside it lacks enough SMS offers.  This could affect its popularuty among the text-crazy teens and the youth.

The government had said Mobile Number Portability would be ready by mid-2009. This is especially helpful when you are unhappy about your service provider, and not being able to switch to another provider because you don’t want to lose your current cell phone number. But now, you may as well say good-bye to such fears as you can switch to a different operator while retaining your old number. This means increased competetion and ultimately it is the consumer who gets to smile. Docomo’s launch is thus very well timed.

I have to admit that Vodafone is definitely in danger of losing at least one happy and loyal customer, Moi. But whether that happens or not is in their hands. The customer’s motto is simple –Gimme More.

My ‘new’ camera

I finally got myself a digital camera today, though the only thing ‘new’ about is it that its ‘newly’ repaired. Anyways its a 4 year old Olympus Camedia C-5000 Zoom . Dad bought it back in 2004. Phew,5 years for a digital camera is something. Now this is something that I like about Olympus. It lasts long, really long, at least from my experience. The DSLR my dad uses presently is not too bad either.

My ‘new’ camera first started having problems after using being used for maybe 3 years. I used to get some weird memory card error every time I clicked a picture. We did try giving it for repair but the problem became persistent before my dad decided to do away with, well at least for a while. In time t developed lot of other problems too. The shutter wouldn’t open at times, start-up problems, lots. Ultimately at least 5 memory cards were spoiled by the faulty camera. olympus

Then one day I decided that I NEED a proper camera. You cant blame me; I’m a Visual Communication student. A camera to me is like an M-16 to a US Marine. My dad wouldn’t let me get a new camera. He advised me to try repairing the old one and use. I refused, but in time learnt I had to budge. And thus went the camera under the knives of a watchful repair-man. This time dad made sure that the camera went into the right hands. After a short wait, the camera finally was sound and ready.

The camera still does have a small problem though. Whenever try zooming, the shutter-speed increases too. Some snag in the wiring I guess. But the repair-man promised he would look into it and hopefully he will. At least I’m relieved that I finally have a camera in my hand. It’s only 5 meg and low on features but then it was made in 2004. Guess I’ll be using this till I get myself a new DSLR. In less than a week, I’ll be formally and officially in final year of college and that means excursion time. I so desperately need a DSLR for the trip. Hopefully that won’t be long.

IE and Firefox get a new rival – Google Chrome

Although I am not really a geek, I know enough to say that Mozilla Firefox is the best browser. I had been using Internet Explorer for a long time. But that was before I ‘discovered’ the marvel called Firefox. But it seems even Firefox has an able rival coming up.  Alright, Google has now decided to bring on its own browser – Chrome. The most striking part about this is that its apparently got a ‘porn’ mode.;) Now all you pervs can watch as much as you want without fearing your mom or dad snooping around. Since its Google we are talking about, you can sure expect a lot special.
