Gold at last..

Finally some good news for India from the Olympics, Abhinav Bindra won the gold in the 10m air rifle event. It is quite heartening to see an Indian win a gold medal at the mega event after a gap of 28 years, and the first individual gold medalist as well. And as usual the media was all over him. Interviews, Special shows, cameras placed all over his house back home, everything one can expect from the Indian media. I do agree its indeed a grand feat. But the way the media has put it, it only shows that sports other than cricket and Sania Mirza has a long way to go.

Bindra was just another gold medalist like many others who have won at Beijing so far. But its a big thing back in India because in its 108 years of Olympic history, has just won 2 silvers and 3 bronzes apart from the hockey victories. We should be ashamed that smaller and poverty driven countries like Ethiopia and Kenya can produce world beaters. India in spite of a population of more than a billion, has just been able to provide just 5 Olympic medalists. Not that we don’t have any talent, there is abundance of talent. But without proper motivation and support from the authorities the talent only goes waste.
